We continue to celebrate! Please notice below is what we made available on Celebration Sunday! To God be the glory! We praise Him for all that he has done and continues to do at GBC! We are very blessed! During a pandemic, we were blessed to be able to pay off our facility and burned the mortgage agreement (copy) on that day. Our Celebration Sunday offering totaled $14,312.63! To God be the glory! Great things He has done!
Celebration Sunday 2020
“This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.” Psalm 118:23
"O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: Because His mercy (loving kindness) endureth forever." Psalm 118:1
”Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask thy father,
and he will shew thee: thy elders, and they will tell thee.” Deuteronomy 32:7
For newer church family members, and for those who already know, a reminder of our church’s earliest history: On February 18, 1939 a group of men and women met in the home of S.E. Coltrane for the purpose of organizing a missionary Baptist church. The meeting was opened with the song, “Amazing Grace.” The advisability of establishing a church was agreed upon and Fair View Baptist was chosen as the name. Rev. A. L. Riddle was called as the first pastor.
There were thirteen original charter members. There is one charter member who is still a part of our family,
Joan Snyder. Of course, we are blessed by many others who have been a faithful part of this ministry for many years, as well as those who have joined in more recent years.
On April 7, 1940 the church met in their new building for the first time. The name of the church was later changed to Gospel Baptist Church.
We praise God for the increase of each individual who attends and makes GBC their home! Our average Sunday morning attendance grew from about 50 in 1983 to 233 in 2004. It was at this time we began to pray and seek the Lord’s will about expansion. The Lord answered our prayers in a miraculous way and provided a buyer for our property on Pisgah Church Road. He led us to this property on North Church Street and then saw to it that the new building was completed in the time frame (less than a year) that was necessary. We held our first service in the new location at 5945 North Church Street in September of 2005 with an attendance of 440. Our largest attendance thus far was an Easter Sunday with 607. We count people because “people count.” We praise God for each relationship that makes up this fellowship.
Our present pastor, Paul Luttrell came to Gospel Baptist Church in August of 1983 as interim pastor and then accepted the call as senior pastor in January 1984. We celebrate his Godly leadership and faithful service of 37 years as pastor!
After serving as the youth pastor, Harlie Miller became our part time assistant pastor in 1994 and continues to faithfully serve in this capacity.
Our Gospel Afterschool Program (G.A.P.) began in August 2007, led by Kristy Hazelwood with Pam Anderson
assisting. These ladies worked tirelessly as this program was extended to include the G.A.P. summer ministry in 2008 and has now has become a “virtual learning” site during the Pandemic as well as an after school ministry. This ministry has proved to be a blessing to the families of the community as well as our own congregation, with many professions of faith plus encouragement in the Lord and His Word.
Gregg Smith was added as the pastoral assistant in 2011 & continues to faithfully serve. Jason Wilson is our full-time youth/worship pastor since April 2016 & continues doing a great job. We are thankful for several part time staff. Karen Luttrell has served as our senior pastor’s secretary for over twenty five years. Kristy Hazelwood
became the Children’s Ministry Director in 2016. JT Mahaffey began serving as our choir director in April 2016.
Denya Haymore was added in 2019 as Outreach Director & Women’s Ministry Director. Cindy Hilton is our Custodial Coordinator as of 2017 and Bekah Thompson became her assistant in 2018. Tracy Brown was added in 2019 as our Nursery Director. We praise the Lord for each staff member. Rosa Gore has served as our financial treasurer since 2016. Jammie Willett has served as our Maintenance Director since 2017. We are blessed by and very thankful for ALL of our staff! We are also grateful for all of the wonderful volunteers who have served in our church over the years and for those that continue to serve today. We appreciate each one!
As we think about & reflect on all that the Lord has done for us, let’s PRAISE Him for some specific blessings in 2020:
§ God has blessed our church family during a pandemic, with the largest general fund amount in the history of our church! We praise Him for His faithfulness and special blessings on our church.
§ We praise Him and give God the glory that we are able to pay off our church facility mortgage in the 15 years, just as we prayed. YES! TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
§ God has blessed us with four new members this year, in spite of a pandemic.
§ God has blessed us with new ways to minister and connect with people! Our Live Streamed services go out to many whom we did not reach before.
§ God continues to bless our “Pastor’s Connect” that we began in March, with words of encouragement and teaching from our pastors!
§ God has blessed us with the technology resources to reach our church family through Zoom, Facebook & YouTube.
§ God increased our GAP ministry in helping families and children in a virtual learning environment.
§ God has increased our Outreach Ministries, with the Burmese community, Glen Haven Ministry & Campus Life, reaching many of our community’s unreached!
§ We sponsored four mobile blood drives just this year, during COVID.
§ We participated in Operation Christmas Child with over 50 boxes being sent out from the church and many more sent through donations online.
§ We are blessed to be able to give out food continually through our Food Pantry.
§ Our church has had a long history of loving missions. In 1985, we began to budget 25% of everything that is given, going back out to missions. $139,770 is given to missions annually. We have had the wonderful privilege of financing the building of a church and the building of a school in Bangladesh. We are thankful for the honor of being a small part of world missions for Christ. We also enjoy regularly scheduled missionaries at our church, and always give them a special offering to promote and further support the work of missions and to encourage those spreading the Gospel.
§ We were glad to sponsor a Prayer Walk for our church family and community, praying for our country.
§ Our drive through Trunk or Treat was a blessing to our community and church family and we are hopeful that our Outdoor Live Nativity will be the best attended yet! These were both opportunities to reach out to our community with the Gospel of Christ.
§ Our congregation prayed for a young man, Jordan Rhodes who needed a kidney transplant and then gave a special offering to help with his family’s expenses.
§ Our Grief Share Ministry continues to help people.
§ ALL FOR GOD’S GLORY! Maybe you can name more blessings.
Thanking Him! Praising Him! Loving Him more! Serving Him in obedience. Seeking Him with our whole heart! Trusting Him completely! Continuing in faithfulness! Reaching the lost! Yielding to Him! Giving of our time, talents and resources! Let’s continue on church family, strong in the Lord!
Thou art my God, and I will praise thee; thou art my God I will exalt thee.
Oh give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good; for his mercy endureth forever.” Psalm 118:28, 29
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE:
We are praying for and looking forward to many people coming to know the Lord through the ministries of our church and through individual relationships. We will intentionally continue our efforts to teach, preach, encourage and love people in our church family as well as through our outreach ministries. We hope to add to our staff in 2021. We look forward to the increase of our giving to missions. We hope to see the completion of the Haymore Athletic Field and the making of a walking trail around the entire property, which would be a blessing to our church family & hopefully draw the community onto the property as a witness to them.
We praise the Lord and CELEBRATE His wonderful blessings upon our church through the years and for what He will accomplish in the years ahead as we continue to look to and trust Him fully.
